This week we had the chance to experience virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). We then experiment with making our own simple AR project by using SparkAR developed by Facebook.
AR "combines real and virtual images", can be achieved using phone camera or special head mounted displays, and some can be projected onto a surface.
In the lecture we discussed Milgram's mixed reality continuum, mixed reality is "anywhere between the extrema of virtuality continuum" (Milgram, Kishino. 1994) and extended reality includes mixed reality along with virtual and real world.
Using the SparkAR I made a simple canon head by combining different 3D objects.
SparkAR can be used to create AR and make 3D object appear in Facebook or Instagram camera when a specific image or face is detected. While SparkAR is still under development the function is clear although while using it I had a few cases where the camera fail to detect the image.
Overall, I feel that AR can be used in many situations such as GPS, games, help with technical works, motion capture etc.
